Fly pattern database

Fly pattern database

How hard would it be to do this? Narco mentioned it, its a great idea. Something we could all contribute to, where you would choose a pattern from a list, click on it and have the dressing, photo and maybe tying/fishing tips also? CJ

John, WiFlyfisher (also John) could answer this easily for you. He is a web designed/web site builder and recently rebuilt Jim Slattery's web site (jimsflyco.com).

CJ,

It requires having a website with a database.

You would need to first develop sort of rough layouts for the various web pages and what content would be included in each page. From that the database has to be created and all the database tables and fields, sort of like an Excel spreadsheet. The database would store all the details including tracking the various fly photos. There would need to be a administration control panel for someone to add, edit and delete all entries in the database. (It's sort like you do for this messageboard.) You could allow people to submit things but nothing would appear until the administrator reviews, modifies and approves it.

I am trying not to get to technical here, but give you some ideas of what it takes to do it right. :ugeek:

Just for the record, If life was simpler, I would easily give up all my hours of programming and become a full-time troutbum and love never seeing anything but beautiful trout streams and rising trout.! No computer or cell phones! :D

Thanks for the detailed explaination John!

I was thinking more on the lines of adding one to this site. Maybe Joe can think it over and see if its feasable. Thanks, CJ

Sonds good but I don't see any reference to the cost involved or who will provide the revenue. Surely you cannot expect Joe to foot the bill for every
I want" on this site. So far we want a database and a classified whats next?

Good point Jack, but keep in mind this is the suggestion forum ;) I dont know if its something that can be added because the site is already up, or something that requires added cash to set up. Thats why I asked it it was feasable or not. CJ

You could just create a separate forum called "Classifieds" and users could post pictures and details of things they want to sell. I am seeing that done more and more of various fishing forums. Plus, there is no additional costs to do that either.

You could do the same thing with the old Classic Catskill patterns. Just create a separate forum where you place photos of the patterns along with details. A forum admin could monitor it to make sure things are added in a specific way and named correctly. Again there is no cost to adding additional forums to this message board.

Just another thought.

It would be a fairly easy thing to add to this forum. My problem right now is time, both mine and my site guy.
Give me a week or so to get caught up here in the shop and I will put a little work into the forum.
