Bass, when the trout water gets warm...

Postby catskilljohn » Mon Jul 05, 2010 3:48 pm

So far the Catskill evenings have been cool enough to allow trout fishing on small upper reach streams. It wont be long now though before the daytime temps catch up to the streams in an adverse way. I took a walk across the street to the lake Saturday with the Herters fiberglass club I use for the warm-water stuff and after a while hooked into my first Lake Jeff bass! I have talked to guys that tell me there are bass in there, and my kids have caught everything except bass but this is my first look at one. Been a while since I have seen one of these

May not be a bad idea to start targeting this species now, at least until the Iso's start showing in numbers. I got this one on a damselfly nymph imitation [tyed with a stinger hook, so the sunfish get caught too ;) ]

Dennis,

Its the first one I caught in years. It might be fun going out right before dark with a deer hair frog and waking it along the edges. CJ

Bass will eat bugs off the surface just like a trout and fight just as well when in their ideal water temperature range. Poppers and bunches of fun but so can the subsurface stuff. Streamers, GIANT wets and nymphs of all kinds.
I want to get one smallmouth trip in this week below Callicoon and play around with a pile of new divers I got for the shop, along with some streamers. The Meatpipe might make an appearance.

I fish a friend's bass-pond up by Trumansburg quite a bit all summer,
also using a fiberglass, er... "club"... :?
(that's ok, John, you keep calling them that - it keeps the prices down... )
Its a hoot. LM bass ,pumpkinseed, and brim - all on Bettes Poppers typically.
Sweet top-water action that is a whole lot less frustrating than Dry fly fishing in the Catskills, if you ask me (gasp!)

I typically cast to shore from a canoe.
It's amazing how close/shallow the lunker LM bass will come...

Also have thought of biding my time, waiting for Fall trout fishing to pick-up,
by trying some fly rod fishing for SM bass on the Susquehanna.
I hear it's quite good.

You know I didn't mean that in a derogatory way :D

That rod has been my "Lake rod" for about 4 years, it was a gift from the guy who gave me the magazine that started my Cinberg craze, and it came with a 1495 Medalist with round line guard also. Its really more of a wading staff than a fly rod, but its great for tugging flies from tall grass and branches should the need arise

of course.

that old Herter's might very well be club-ish.
I don't have any experience with Herters rods.

But if that is your only glass rod, and is the basis for formulating your opinions,
next time we get together Ill bring along a few fiberglass rods for you to try,

of course.

But in all honesty,
that old Herter's might very well be club-ish, though.
I don't have any experience with Herters rods, to say for sure.
