Frank Sawyer nymphs

Some call them Bottom Dredgers. They are too often over shadowed by the dry fly, but have their place here.

Frank Sawyer nymphs

My friend Janne of Sweden visited us 4 or 5 years ago for the Guilds tying event in Roscoe. When the show was closing down, he caught me as we were leaving and handed me a little container with some nymphs. It wasn't till I got home and did some research that I realized what a great gift it was.

Janne mentioned they were most likely tyed by Franks wife, she was keeping the ball rolling for a while after Frank.

So, here is a picture of them, a Killer bug, tyed with Chadwicks 477 maybe? a Gray Goose and a Pheasant Tail.

I caught one of my best fish on a #18 Sawyer style PT about 3 years ago at Horse Brook Run, been using them ever since.

CJ, Sawyer's PT is still my number one fly when nymph fishing. Not the american version tyed by Al Troth with legs and peacock herl.
I fish it like Sawyer did (Induced Take) by letting it sink to the bottom and rising it to imatate a natrual nymph. Never fished the Grey Goose before but I should with all the cranefly larva and caddis larva on the streams I fish. What's the closet material today for the Chadwicks 477 ?

Oh yea, your very welcome for the articals. Glad I could help out. Dennis

The PT is on my list of the all-time great flies ever created. I have to admit that I do not tie it in the traditional Sawyer method. I use olive thread, but I do rib with copper wire. I have bastardized it into a floating variation with a tiny post and a miniature (relative to the hook size) parachute hackle, and that has proved to be very effective on the Henry's Fork.
